Answer to Frequent LASIK Questions

Am I a good candidate for LASIK?

At our Oakland and Berkeley vision correction practice, we believe the ideal LASIK candidate is 21 years of age or older and has healthy eyes. Candidates must not have had a significant change in their prescription in the last 12 months. People with certain medical conditions or women who are pregnant or nursing may not be good candidates for LASIK. The best way to determine if LASIK is right for you is to schedule a free LASIK consultation in Oakland or Pinole so that Dr. Breaux can do a thorough exam and discuss your results.

Why is there such a wide range of prices for LASIK surgery?

We cannot say why others charge what they do, but we can tell you that it is important that you determine what those prices include. Our cost includes all surgical fees, post-operative visits for six months, and enhancements for one year. Because of his dedication and belief in personalized service, Dr. Breaux will do all important follow-up exams, discuss your progress, and options for enhancements. What equipment is used?

Dr. Breaux uses the most recent LASIK software upgrade for the VISX Excimer Laser including Custom Wavefront Analysis and Correction Tracking and Iris Registration at his Pinole and Oakland eye surgery offices. In some clinical trials, Wavefront-guided LASIK systems have suggested a higher treatment accuracy than conventional LASIK, and patients have reported increased contrast sensitivity, and fewer glare and halo effects. Iris Registration and Correction Tracking are custom components designed to compensate for any rotation of the iris during the procedure. They ensure treatment is delivered to each eye accurately.

What kind of results can I expect?

As with any surgical procedure, results cannot be guaranteed. The results of LASIK have been overwhelmingly successful and have improved the vision of millions around the world. In a recent FDA study, 98% of patients treated for nearsightedness and/or astigmatism achieved 20/40 or better. This means they can drive legally, play sports and join the police or fire departments without depending on corrective eye wear. People who are most satisfied with the results of LASIK clearly possess realistic expectations of what their vision will be like after surgery.

Is LASIK safe?

Millions of people around the world have benefited from the LASIK procedure and it has become the most commonly performed procedure in the United States. Dr. Breaux has over 20 years of experience in the field of Refractive Surgery.

Is LASIK painful?

Because the cornea is anesthetized using topical anesthetic eye drops, there is very little discomfort during the LASIK procedure. Patients may feel some pressure but not pain.

How long do I need to be out of my contacts prior to the exam?

You should remove your soft contacts two weeks before your pre-operative exam and wear only your glasses. Hard contact lenses should be removed at least three weeks before your pre-operative exam. Your corneas must return to their "normal" shape before LASIK is performed.
